Glossophobia

http://talknerdy2me.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/microphone.jpg

Public speaking is a tricky thing and everyone has to do it at some point. As Ralph Waldo Emerson put it "Happy is the hearing man; unhappy the speaking man." Have you ever opened your mouth to recite a speech and found the words had somehow magically disappeared into the air, as if your audience somehow managed to take them right out of your mouth? If you have, you are not alone. A good percentage of the public has in some way, shape and form has experienced this uncomfortable and even terrifying phenomenon known as glossophobia, or fear of public speaking.

describes this public speaking fear as "remarkably common"; a whopping 75% of the public have glossophobia. So with the phobia being as common as it is, why does our society so heavily depend on public presentations in everything from our careers to learning the alphabet in kindergarten? Somehow it is not only beneficial for one to be able to speak in public, it is necessary. Why are we so afraid of something that is so vital to our success? n answers this question by explaining that although glossophobics are afraid to speak in public, there is a large portion of this group who suffer in less degrees and can therefore speak without getting sick and in addition, there are many helps and aids out there that help catalyze the courage needed to overcome this fear. What I want to briefly explore today is the different types of anxiety that one can experience and the methods that are out there to help people overcome their fears.

There are two types of people who experience glossophobia, chances are if you fear public speaking, you are going to fit into one category or the other; habituaters and sensitizers. If you are a Habituaters, you have a lower anxiety traits and the worse part of speaking for you is getting those first words out of your mouth. Habitauters usually say something along the lines of  'I was so nervous when I started but by the time I finished it wasn't so bad. I even wished I had more time.' According to Paul L. Witt, what happens is these types of speakers have habituated, or have "gotten used to the context of public speaking"

Fortunately for habituaters, getting over their fear is relatively easy, they just have to find something that is motivating enough to get them into the hot seat, like an assignment for class or a presentation that their job depends on. For people like myself things are not so easy. Whenever I speak in public (which is far too much for my own taste), I start the speech just a little nervous, or nervous enough to be a little uncomfortable and somehow end the speech nearly falling to my knees.

People who experience this are known as sensitizers, going through the exact opposite of the habituaters experience. Rather than focusing on what you are saying or where you are going with an argument, sensitizers tend to find the little things that "ruin" their speech like trembling hands or knobbly knees. They get really into the speech, just in the worst ways possible. And when the speech is over,DeNoon says that "sensitizers don't relax. In fact, they become even more anxious."

So we understand a little about the different types of glossophobics, but how can we manage this fear?

With glossophobia, there is no such thing as unavailable help. There are training courses, self-help material in every bookstore and organizations that that help you improve and fine tune your speaking ability and give you the confidence that you need to succeed. For those who may experience a more severe case (much like myself), there are therapies that can help you manage your fear, by taking yourself out of the panic, calm yourself down and boost your confidence levels. If all else fails, there are several medications in the market that your doctor can prescribe to help you in your weakest moments.

Toastmaters is an organization that is dedicated to helping people overcome their fear. They have an active community, classes that you can take and advice from leaders. On Toastmasters website, you can find helpful tips in preparing for a presentation like "know your material", "concentrate on the message- not the medium" and "relax" all directed for those who feel anxiety towards speaking in front of others at any degree.

Finishing off his earlier statement, Emerson goes on saying "speech is power: speech is to persuade, to convert, to compel." If you experience public speaking fear, great or small. You can know that you are not alone. Wether you are a sensitizer or a habituater, you can find strength and others just like you. There is help out there for you and if you choose to overcome your fear, you will find success in your work, school and personal life. The power to speak without fear gives you power to excel in life.

Just like Ben

Benjamin Franklin was quite the inspirational man.

Did you know what he created a list of 13 virtues that he wanted to work on? He would pick a virtue and he would work on it until he felt he achieved that virtue and then move on to the next. I have been thinking, and I want to try the same thing out.

His 13 original virtues were Temperance, Silence, Order, Resolution, Frugality, Industry, Sincerity, Justice, Moderation, Cleanliness, Tranquility, Chastity, and Humility. I have picked my own that I believe I need to work on.

Gratitude

Patience

Sincerity/ Honesty

Frugality

Attentiveness

Moderation

So here is how it is going to work, I am going to pick a virtue and work on it for a month. As soon as that month is up, I will move on to the next one and (hopefully) write what I have learned. So for this month, I have already started on Gratitude (and it is SO hard!). I am excited! :D Hopefully it all goes well! I will keep you updated on any game changers

So finally got to go on a mini road trip (cross that off the list)! It was mini because it was only like 3 hours, but that is probably about as long as I can last in a car without losing it.
On our way to the most fabulous castle dale!

Necklace Organizer DIY

This is super fun, efficient and is a really nice addition to the bedroom!

 Just 3 easy steps!

Step 1- Get a plain bulletin board (I had already put mine on the wall but it is probably easier to wait until you are all done before you go mounting anything)

Step 2- Decorate! Decorate! Decorate!! I used some old miss-matched scrapbooking paper, some sticker letters and stuck them all together with those little flat bullets. You can get a little creative, just don't go overboard because we will need some room for the necklaces!

Step 3- Time to add the Necklaces!! Just stick a whole bunch of thumb tacks to the board (I used clear ones but it would be fun to find some that match your board). Once all your thumb tacks are on, just hang the necklaces over and there you go! Ta-da!! :)

Have an awesome day!! :)

{ I am his Daughter }

The photos in the magazines
Don't dictate who I'm supposed to be
The world can't recognize, all that I am inside
But I know in His eyes, I am a part of, the bigger picture,

There's so much more to me
He helps me see that I have so much to offer
I am His daughter
He loves me the way I am,
He's my strength when I stand
He is my King, and my Father,
I am His daughter.

The people on the TV screen,
The leaders, rulers, and queens
I watch them shape the world,
And though I'm just a girl, I still know for sure,
That I am a part of, the bigger picture

There's so much more to me
He helps me see that I have so much to offer
I am His daughter
He loves me the way I am,
He's my strength when I stand
He is my King, and my Father,
I am His daughter

And when I'm feeling small,
And wondering if I'll ever, find courage to stand tall
Through His love I remember

There's so much more to me
He helps me to see that I have so much to offer
I am His daughter
He loves me the way I am
He's my strength when I stand
He is my King, and my Father,
I am His daughter

Parable of the Flower

So I have a little story here
I like to call it the Parable of the Flower

It all started with a little seed

It was planted into the ground with much love and care with hopes that  it would grow to be a beautiful, bright and strong flower
Using the nutrients in the dirt and the warmth from the sun, the seed sprouted and grew

Everyday the it would gather from food the dirt and grow towards the sun until eventually it bloomed

One day, the flower was waiting for the sun to rise, but instead it found dark storm clouds

Rather then the warmth and light that would come from the sun, the flower was left with darkness, its petals were bombarded with rain and the wind threatened to pull it clean out of the ground

Just holding on was the only thing the flower could do

Eventually, the sun rose again

The flower had made it through the long storm
Grateful to be out of the chaos, what the little flower didn't realize that it needed the storm just as much if not more then it needed the sunshine

The rain that beat upon it only gave it nutrients to grow, the wind that tugged upon its roots made them grow deeper and because it was without warmth and light the little flower it that much more grateful to the sun

We are all just like the flower

We all start out as little seeds with so much potential

We grow towards our Savior using all the resources we have around to support us

And then the hard times come and we are forced to be tested
Just as the flower didn't realize that the storm had actually helped it, sometimes we don't see how our hardships and trials help us

What we first perceive them to be it far from the truth

In reality, are blessings in disguise

The Book of Mormon and Cell Phones

The Book of Mormon and Cell Phones

Don’t you wonder what would happen if we treated our Book of Mormon like we treat our cell phones?
What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets?
What if we turned back to go get it if we forgot it?
What if we flipped through it several times a day?
What if we spent an hour of more using it every day?
What if we used it to receive messages from the “text”?
What if we treated it like we couldn’t live without it?
What if we used it as we traveled?
What if we used it in case of an emergency?
Oh, and a few more things- Unlike our cell phones, on Plan fits all.
Unlimited usage.
No roaming charges.
You always have reception.
No weak signals AND we don’t ever have to worry about our Book of Mormon being disconnected, because our Savior already paid the bill!

To the Humble

So I have been reading quite a bit of poetry lately from Edgar A Guest. I came across this one (To the Humble) that thought that it was absolutely beautiful :)
If all the flowers were roses,
    If never daisies grew,
If no old-fashioned posies
    Drank in the morning dew,
Then man might have some reason
    To whimper and complain,
And speak these words of treason,
That all our toil is vain.
 ...
If all the stars were Saturns
    That twinkle in the night,
Of equal size and patterns,
    And equally as bright,
Then men in humble places,
    With humble work to do,
With frowns upon their faces
    Might trudge their journey through.

 ...
But humble stars and posies
    Still do their best, although
They're planets not, nor roses,
    To cheer the world below.
And those old-fashioned daisies
    Delight the soul of man;
They're here, and this their praise is:
    They work the Master's plan.

 ...
Though humble be your labor,
    And modest be your sphere,
Come, envy not your neighbor
    Whose light shines brighter here.
Does God forget the daisies
    Because the roses bloom?
Shall you not win His praises
    By toiling at your loom?

...
Have you, the toiler humble,
    Just reason to complain,
To shirk your task and grumble
And think that it is vain
Because you see a brother
    With greater work to do?
No fame of his can smother
    The merit that's in you.

Daisies are my favorite flower, always have been.
They are not seen as a delicacy
Most people would probably much rather see a rose then a daisy- especially on a date ;) but...
I love daisies because every time I see one, I am reminded of the sun, of the joy and life that it brings.
Daises are beautiful because they light up the world.
Their lights are small, but even the smallest light can make a difference.
Don't you dare forget to shine, even if your light is small :)

Looking through the Window

Much of life is spent looking through a window

We watch so many different things out there
Careers, different relationships, places to travel
The delicacies of life
The things we dream about

At first we are happy to watch them- these things are new, exciting and unlike anything we have seen

A certain point comes of watching... waiting... Where we want more then just our seat in front of the window
We want to experience these things for ourselves

But we are afraid to leave and we ask ourselves
What if it is not as good as it seems?
We let this question work in us until it fills us with doubt and despair
And you stay, staring outside your window
letting it eat you up on the inside

....and then, you miss out on so much.....

But, instead of asking if it will be as good as it seems, ask this instead....

How will you ever know unless you try?

Don't let fear of what might be take away all that you CAN be

Do it... I dare you

ABC'S

Alright, This is ABSOLUTELY one of my new year resolutions!! From President Thomas S. Monsons Living the Abundant Life

The ABC's of life :)

Attitude
“Attitude, to me, is more important than … the past, … than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company, a church, a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day.” -Charles Swindol

Believe in Yourself
“He does not believe that does not live according to his belief.” -Thomas Fuller

Courage
“Whatever you do, you need courage. Whatever course you decide on, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising that tempt you to believe that your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to an end requires some of the same courage that a soldier needs. Peace has its victories, but it takes brave men and women to win them.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

Really though, its awesome! :))
